Rewriting the Voice Inside

A solo Talanoa about self-talk, survival, and self-compassion

In this solo episode, I open up about something that so many of us quietly carry… the harsh inner critic.
That voice inside that whispers:
“You’re not doing enough.”
“You should be stronger.”
“You always mess it up.”

It’s the voice that doesn’t just talk at us, it brings us down, holds us back, and makes us question our worth.

Where does that voice come from?

For many of us, especially growing up in cultures where emotional expression was discouraged or misunderstood, negative self-talk became a survival strategy.
It was how we coped. How we kept ourselves small, silent, or in check to avoid conflict, shame, or disappointment.

But that voice? It might’ve helped us survive… but it’s not helping us thrive.

Rewriting that voice isn’t easy... but it’s possible.

In this episode, I share my own journey of noticing that inner critic, challenging it, and slowly - gently - rewriting it into a voice that supports me, not shames me.

It’s not about pretending everything’s fine.
It’s about learning to speak to ourselves like someone we love, with alofa, softness, and truth.

And when that voice creeps in again (because it will), we get to pause and ask:
“Is this voice helping me grow, or is it keeping me stuck?”

The antidote?

Self-compassion.
Not toxic positivity. Not perfection.
But giving ourselves grace in the messy, quiet, everyday moments.
